![]() Overall, we really prefer a camping lantern to have over 1,000 lumens for the most effective and useful lighting. Anything less and you’ll most likely find yourself less than satisfied with the amount of area light. We personally consider 700 lumens to be the minimum amount of lumens for a large area camping lantern. Not nearly enough to fully light a large area like a campsite! On top of this, the average flashlight and headlamp are well under 300 lumens. This is partly because flashlights and headlamps generally have a tight beam over a long distance versus a flood light that fills a wide area. Neither are ideal for continuous light over a large area. Headlamps are great because they’re hands free but they only illuminate whats directly in front of your face.
